Optimising Fragmentation using Fracture Amplified Seismic Timing (FAST)

Boral’s Orange Grove quarry commenced production in 1962 and produces aggregates of various grades, gabion stone, road base and rail ballast. The quarry covers an area of approximately 56 ha and is located in a semi-rural area at the foot of the Darling Scarp near Perth, Western Australia.

Through-Seam Blasting Optimisation

Through the introduction of i-konTM II electronic detonators and the collaboration between the Orica Technical team and the Dawson Drill and Blast team, significant improvements have been made to through-seam blasting practices in the Terrace. Through-seam blasts in the Terrace have demonstrated more consistent blast movement and lower signs of visible coal disruption. With increased focus and improvements in mining practices from Dawson operations and a substantial input from the Dawson technical department, a significant increase in coal seam recovery has occurred, representing a significant increase in value to Dawson operations.

Electronically Initiated Presplit - Talison Minerals - Greenbushes

Talison Minerals operate the Greenbushes Mining Operation adjacent to the small town of Greenbushes, 240 km South of Perth. The hard rock operation requires regular blasting in order to efficiently excavate the target minerals Spodumene and Tantalum. The close proximity of the Greenbushes Township has required implementation of specific blasting initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of airblast on the town.
