A project was initiated with Orica Mining Services to improve blasting practices and quantify the impact on the process plant. While significant improvements to blast fragmentation had previously been made, the actual benefit of those improvements to downstream processing had not been quantified and it was believed that there was scope for further improvement.

Mine Los Colorados is nowadays the main iron producer mine site of the CAP company. It is located in the Atacama region, at approximately 25 kms North-West of the city of Vallenar. The problems shown below consider the very narrow extraction (between 30 to 60m), which hampers the shovel operation (Bucyrus Erie 495 III). Due to this, it is top priority for the mine to get peak widths of extraction.

process which has resulted in ore body mining taking place in geotechnical units of extremely hard rock with
the presence of water.
